Laser hair removal uses selective photothermolysis. The laser sends light energy into the pigment inside each hair follicle. That light turns to heat, and the heat damages the follicle so it cannot grow new hair, all without harming the skin around it.

Hair grows in cycles. Not every follicle is in the active growth phase at the same time, and the laser only targets hair during the active (anagen) phase.
